He's afraid of growing up! Well, Ben just dreads the day when all his responsibilities pile up on him and he's not strong enough to deal with them. (It's called Gerascophobia – fear of growing old or aging.) Naturally he's also scared that something bad might happen to what remains of his family. Ever since Alexis started acting like their mother was still alive despite being buried a long time ago Ben has suffered from Taphephobia – the fear of the grave, or fear of being placed in a grave while still alive.

He hasn't been to Lost Lake yet.

PERSONALITY

Good job, Blackwell Police Department, you probably picked the worst detective to track down the missing persons. While his job is an important status symbol to Ben and he likes solving cases because they can be exciting, almost like living in an action film, he can be quite indifferent concerning his work sometimes. He tends to lose interest very fast, which makes him the worst person to work on cases that possibly take years. It's very much possible that the job interviewers were fooled by his youthful energy. Ben can be very charming when he wants to. There's no way you can make he do anything he doesn't feel like doing. Either he will pretend to forget about it or talk someone else into doing it for him. At his best he can be very caring and considerate however.

Ben is still very much like how he was when he was ten. His features make him look younger than he actually is but there's also a boyish spirit to him. When he's excited about something he'll be entirely focused on that one thing, be it a person or a hobby. Everything else could disappear and he wouldn't even notice. It's thanks to the trashy detective novels he has been reading since he was a kid that he got the inspiration to become a detective. If he hadn't been motivated it's very likely that he would have dropped out of school. He seems to have an endless amount of energy until it suddenly disappears only to reappear unexpectedly. This makes him an exhausting person to have around. He's quite self-centered, often going on about himself rather than asking how others are doing. This doesn't mean he'd want to be left alone though. Being surrounded by people is good. He likes pranks, even those ones where others get hurt.

He doesn't seem to realize how childish his behavior can appear to others. It's either that or he doesn't care. The only opinion besides his own that matters is Trent's. In addition to that he's always moving on, not clinging to the past. These two things combined make him a good detective in theory. He's able to let go of cases that remain unsolved and not take his work too personally, but there's also such a thing as not caring enough. It's his good luck and energy that have gotten him this far but how it will be in the future remains to be seen. He's not a person who will deal well with aging and responsibilities.

HISTORY

Ben was born to a big family in Chicago. Five children in total, Ben the second youngest, Trent being the oldest. His childhood was a tough one with his father being a very difficult alcoholic and his mother dying tragically after becoming slowly more and more abusive. He was very young at the time so there's only little he remembers of his mother. After all the most important figure from his childhood was his big brother who took care of them and acted more like a parent than their actual parents ever did. He always looked up to Trent for a reason although there was a time when he caused a lot of trouble with his usual teenage behavior and tried to question Trent's place as the head of their family.

After their mother died their father made them to move to Elkins, a town near Blackwell. Whereas Trent worked hard to bring money to the table Ben concentrated on his studies and remained at the top of the class. It was natural for him to leave to study elsewhere after their father died. Perhaps it would have been better to stay and help Trent take care of their youngest sibling, Alexis, but Ben was always full of thirst for adventures in the bigger world. However he has always been protective of his little sister who suffers from anxiety. When they were little Ben was scared of her because she claimed she could see their dead mother.

At school he started football because Trent was a big fan of sports and Ben looked up to him. It wasn't for nothing because playing in the Blackwell Bees earned him a scholarship. He completed the police academy training program at the Institute, West Virginia and from started training to become a detective simply because he thought it would be cooler than the average police job. Right now Ben is investigating the missing persons in Blackwell. He took the job thinking it would be interesting and also fun to be able to live near his big brother and little sister again. They haven't seen each other much during the last years, but they have kept in contact.

While Ben was away for years he didn't actually mature during his absence. Even as a kid he had a fast temper and his moods often flied from one extreme to another. The police training made the feelings easier to control, but he's still very fast to fall in love or in turn to lose interest in the same person. Because of this he had a lot of short flings with both men and women until he found Moira Charles, the person who would become his girlfriend for two years. It was only because of Moira's exceptional personality that they managed to stay together for so long. Unfortunately the longest relationship in his life ended badly when Ben cheated on Moira with a man just after they had moved to Blackwell together. Basically the idea of being stuck in one relationship for the rest of his life freaked him out and stuff happened. He never saw it that way though. To him it was a honest mistake, nothing more. She threatened to cut off his head and immediately moved back to where they came from. He was on the edge of a suicide for a day and then quickly recovered. Almost forgot about the whole incident too. At the time he was drunk and it seemed like a funny idea. True to his nature he didn't think of the consequences aka working with the man in the future.

He likes motorcycles, staying at hotels and reading trashy detective novels.
